All those recyclables you have set aside can be turned in to fun toys! This week we made a Recycled Toy Town (still in progress) with a juice bottle, vitamin bottle, milk carton, and box. I took my inspiration from If You Take a Mouse to School, which is a companion book to this week’s Storybook Summer book of the week If You Give a Mouse a Cookie.
Materials:
- Recyclables – cereal boxes, boxes, milk cartons – anything!
- Construction paper
- Paint or markers
- Tape or Glue
Step One: Paint or cover your box/item. We chose to cover with construction paper and tape. Painting is another good option.
Step Two: Make windows, doors, and roofs for your residences. To make the roof fold a brown piece of paper in four, then put it together like a triangle. This will make putting it on the box much easier (trust me!).
Don’t forget to add some people!
We had a lot of fun with this! I am pretty sure our town will be around for awhile.

So cute. As a couponer, I end up with a lot of little, identical containers (like five 18 oz jars from peanut butter instead of two 40 oz jars). I was pondering the other day if there’s something I could do with various containers other than put them in the recycle bin. I could make a whole city. I remember my mom saving things like egg and milk cartons for the school art room.
What a great idea! I love the little people at the windows too!
