One in five meals are eaten in the car. Does that statistic shock you like it did me? What about this: On average, kids today spend almost seven and a half hours a day using some form of electronic media. Yet we wonder why childhood obesity is soaring. One step towards leading healthier lives is to eat as a family more often.
Laurie David, the product of An Inconvienient Truth, wants to help America’s families sit down together. Her book “The Family Dinner” provides reasons, recipes, and fun tools to do so. The book has facts scattered throughout that make you think. One that set my wheels in motion was about juice boxes. “2.8 billion juice boxes end up in landfills every year. An eight-ounce box of apple juice contains thirty grams of sugar and zero grams of fiber. A norma-size apple contains eighteen grams of sugar and three grams of fiber.” As time goes on we become desesnsitzed to the world around us and start to forget small details. Laurie brings many important things to light in her book.
Research has proven that everything we worry about as parents—from drugs to alcohol, promiscuity, to obesity, academic achievement and just good old nutrition— can all be improved by the simple act of eating and talking together around the table. The family meal is fundamental.
After reading and rereading parts of The Family Dinner I am hooked. Dinner has always been a big deal in our house, but the importance of sitting down together while eating nutritious food cooked at home is now fundamental. (Of course there will be occasional exceptions). Taco Tuesday is starting and will become a weekly theme starting next week. I really believe that every family should have a copy of this book. The statistics are amazing, the ideas are inspiring, and the recipes look scrumptious. I am very happy that we have a copy available to giveaway courtesy of the Hachette Book Group. In my family their favorite is any meal isn’t as important as their favorite desserts which are homemade apple pie and homemade cheesecake covered with cheeries.
