Raise your hand if you are a child of the 80’s. Don’t be timid. Now put it up just a little bit further if you can recall getting up on Saturday morning (otherwise known as “Cartoon Day” at our house) to sit in front of a what-was-then state of the art television, but now when you think about that old television you laugh. Did you watch The Smurfs too? They were one of my favorite cartoons (right up there with She Ra and Rainbow Brite. What? I am a girl born in the 1980’s!)
Warner Home Video recently released The Smurfs: A Magical Smurf Adventure on DVD. It’s Smurftacular!
Here’s the scoop on the DVD: The Smurfs: A Magical Smurf Adventure became available on July 19, 2011 and contains 10 episodes of the Emmy Award winning series. The Smurfs: A Magical Smurf Adventure will retail for $19.97 (SRP). The 10 episodes on the DVD include: Smurf Van Winkle , Revenge of the Smurfs, Magic Fountain, Smurf Me No Flowers, The Cursed Country, The Blue Plague, The Ring of Castellac, A Mere Truffle, Gormandizing Greedy, and Sister Smurf.
Here’s the scoop on The Smurfs: The Smurfs are a group of over 100 bluish, three-apple tall creatures who live in the mushroom homes of Smurf Village. They are led by 543-year-old Papa Smurf (who doesn’t look a day over 530). A few of the Smurfs include Lazy, Brainy, Smurfette, Hefty, Clumsy, and Vanity. Their lives would be perfect were it not for their villainous Gargamel, a wizard who spends his days trying to capture them to eat, turn into gold, or for other evil reasons. Gargamel’s cat Azrael adds to the menace, always looking for a tasty, Smurfy snack.
My Thoughts: This is one of my new favorite DVD’s. Do you remember the swirling Hanna-Barbera star logo? That is included in this DVD and it brings back many memories. There are times when the announcer welcomes us back to Saturday morning cartoons. The inclusion of those two elements make The Smufs: A Magical Smurf Adventure be genuine – just like the 1980’s. I could seriously cuddle up on the couch and watch these episodes all day long. My older daughter is almost 5, which is the same age I was when I watched The Smurfs and she is totally entranced with the Smurfs as well. Of course she wants to go see the brand new Smurfs movie in theaters now. She asked “But will Gargamel, Pee Wee, and Johan be in the new movie too?” Be still my beating heart!
